How Can I Become a Freelance Project Manager?

One of the most common questions in get in my DMs is:

➡ "How can I become a freelance project manager?"

First things first: I would like to point out there are quite a lot of angles to this question. If this is something you are pondering, I suggest you get more targeted with your question to produce the answers you are seeking. 💡

Second, the journey looks different for everyone! There is no magic formula. It takes time and work.

Here are some things I would encourage you to consider:

✅ Why do you want to be a freelancer?

Is it for freedom? More money? Passion about a specific niche?

As a freelancer I can guarantee you I don't work less, but I am able to build more flexibility into my schedule. Also, keep in mind you probably aren't going to start out making $100+/hour. You may even make less than your full time job until you gain traction.

The passion you have for the work will override a bumpy start. Make sure you are pairing with the right clients and doing work you love.

✅ Start small by taking on short term projects while you still have your day job.

My suggestion would be to offer your services to people you know (colleagues who work for agencies are a good place to start). Start building your freelance portfolio this way before you throw yourself out there to internet gig sites.

✅ Focus on building your network.

There are many different ways you can do this, and it would be wise to choose several avenues. LinkedIn is only one of the potential choices for networking (although it's a great one!).

I created a YouTube channel and have been very targeted about my content. This has allowed me to attract exactly the right type of clients.

While you don't necessarily need to go to this extent, choose networking activities that connect you with the right folks, and allow you to present yourself in a way that is authentic to you and your goals.

Becoming a successful freelancer doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, but if you really want it then there is no stopping you 💪🏻
