Four key things that have helped me succeed

Four years as a freelancer.

Four key things that have helped me succeed.

Here they are:

  1. Always have at least 3 income streams.

  2. Live below my means and aggressively track my finances.

  3. Give myself freedom and space to try out new ideas and let my business evolve.

  4. Dedicate time every week to networking in person and online (I have targets for myself and hold myself accountable).

Notice I didn't say I find one big contract and then work exclusively with that organization for 6 months like I'm basically a full time employee.

Notice I didn't say I'm stressed out during the months I make less money because I foolishly overspent and didn't plan ahead.

Notice I didn't say I create a structure so rigid that it's impossible to iterate or pivot.

Notice I didn't say I ignore networking because I don't feel like it, don't need it, or already know enough people.

Is this lifestyle hard? Sure, sometimes.

Is being a full time employee hard? You tell me.

Am I beyond grateful to have the freedom to pick up my daughter from school everyday, take her to activities 4 days a week, go to the pool or the movies impromptu on a Friday and not worry about getting laid off?

YES.

At the end of the day, it depends on what type of hard you want.
