Are project managers still in demand?

And if they are, then why is it so hard to land a project management job?

➡ From PMI’s article “Global Project Management Job Trends - 2023”:

“According to PMI’s most recent Talent Gap report, 2.3 million people will be needed each year to fill all of the project management oriented positions expected to open by 2030.”

The article also points out that while economic growth is expected to slow in 2023, there is still a serious shortage of project talent.

❌ But landing a PM job isn’t necessarily a piece of cake.

Everyday I receive messages from folks who are struggling to land project management jobs.

Some even tell me they have been applying for over a year. 😮

Naturally, this makes me wonder why it can be so challenging to find a PM job. 

Here are some thoughts:

💡 “Project Manager” isn’t an entry level position. Unless you have a little experience under your belt, you are probably searching under the wrong job title.

⭐ PRO TIP: Get some experience! And remember, “project” experience doesn’t necessarily need to have “Project” in the job title.

💡Even though there is demand, you still need to be strategic when applying.

⭐PRO TIP: Focus on applying to jobs that are a good fit for your background, interests, and overall skill set to increase your odds of landing an interview. And polish up that resume while you're at it!

💡Project management is about more than passing a test or making lists. According to the article, “companies need to focus on hiring problem solvers and relationship builders who can help them drive change and deliver strategic value.”

⭐PRO TIP: Focus on building power skills like communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and strategic thinking. Be patient with yourself. It takes time, experience, and a lot of effort to become skilled in this area.
