Ambiguity in Startup Project Management

Project Management itself may sound like a pretty clear job - - after all, it’s defined by process and organization, so how messy can it get?

The truth is, this may or may not be the case depending on where you work, what type of project you are working on, and the method by which it’s being accomplished. In the case of startup, you’re often going to find quite a bit of ambiguity or “inexactness” where details or even goals are concerned.

Below are a few ways I’ve learned to manage ambiguity as a startup project manager:

1) Ask Questions - The opposite of ambiguity is clarity. Posing well-formed questions that clarify and define goals, milestones, and tasks are the absolute best thing any project manager can do when faced with ambiguity.

2) Don’t Get Too Attached - Sometimes, when projects are formed in heightened states of ambiguity before clarification occurs, it’s necessary to pivot and “abandon” work. This can be difficult for anyone. Remember that each step produces vital information and every iteration should be used as a learning experience.

3) Absorb the Ambiguity - As a project manager you are serving as a communication facilitator and often gatekeeper of your “builders.” The more you can absorb the ambiguity before it hits your team, the better they will be able to focus on their work. Always remain honest and transparent, but remember that a large part of startup project management is to filter this information in order to maximize team efficiency.

How have you encountered ambiguity in your workplace and what strategies have helped you deal with it?
