Project management is so much more than a certification

Half of the posts I read about project management are actually about how to get a certification.

And this makes me sad.

On the one hand I get it, but project management is SO much more than a certification!

Project management is about connecting people, ideas and resources to get things done.

Personally, I get excited about THAT part of project management.

Of the over 150 videos I have made about the project management experience, only about 3 touch on certifications.

The vast majority of my content is about how to actually manage projects in the real world.

Topics like:

⭐ How to build businesses using project management.

⭐ Practical tools that help project managers navigate tricky situations.

⭐ Lessons learned and full transparency around often avoided topics.

The community that has resulted from my content on YouTube is made up of people who are passionate about the work itself. I've found these are the folks who usually thrive long term.

Of course, I'm also aware that the way the system is set up, certifications are often a necessary step to get to the next level and can also be a way to learn and build community.

But I believe if you choose a certification it should be complementary to your journey, not the destination.

And I'm worried that the uber focus on getting the certification takes away from the essence of the work itself.

❓ What do you think?

*Please don't read this as a post telling you not to get certifications or that certifications don't matter, etc. That's up to you to decide.
